Charlotte Hornets Spectrum Center AR Mural Fan Experience
Spectrum Center, home to NBA’s Charlotte Hornets Basketball team, is an indoor arena hosting over 19,000 fans located in Uptown Charlotte, North Carolina. CSM Productions, a Charlotte-based sports activation company, partnered with Groove Jones to create an AR fan experience inside the arena for their client Spectrum Mobile.
Inside the central atrium within the arena, the CSM Productions team wanted to create a fan photo opportunity using a 20-foot-wide illuminated mural using AR (Augmented Reality).
The Groove Jones team worked with CSM to design the artwork for the custom mural highlighting the skyline of Charlotte and the Spectrum Center.
The mural serves as a backdrop for the AR experience, which shows the city coming to life with thumping music, an animation of the Charlotte Hornets logo, and then finishes with a guest appearance of their mascot – Hugo the Hornet. Below is an overview of the experience.
Here you see Hugo after he walks out, gives a High 5, then poses with the fans for a picture or video. (Hugo is digitally composited into the shot through AR.)
The experience is powered by Spark AR – the AR platform for Instagram and Facebook. As guests launch the experience, they are given a quick promotional ad and offer for Spectrum Mobile.
The activation will run all season long and will be managed by CSM Production brand ambassadors. Below are a few more shots of the AR mural activation area within the Spectrum Center.
