Verizon 5G and Riot Games’ League of Legends 5G MEC Virtual Production
Groove Jones worked with the Verizon 5G and Riot Games‘ League of Legends teams to create a mobile virtual production using the power of 5G. Through 5G MEC (Multi Edge Computing) ultra-wideband we transformed League of Legends super fans (Matt Higginbotham, Juan “JayJ” Guibert, Zaqueri Black, Herculyse, and Britanni) into Jinx from the new Netflix Arcane series in real-time.

Virtual production (VP) is a filmmaking and television production technique that combines real-time digital elements with physical production to create realistic environments and effects on a virtual set. It uses technologies like computer-generated imagery (CGI), augmented reality, and motion capture. We used similar techniques for branded activation experiences like we did for Invesco QQQ at the NCAA Final Four – https://www.groovejones.com/invesco-qqq-ai-ncaa-final-four-experience/ for basketball fans to step onto the court. We are also doing this for the University of South Florida and Innovative Education Studios, a subset of the University, to enhance their online course content through the creation of 3D environments for virtual productions. The objective was to capture and then digitally re-create locations of the USF campus for the college to use as backgrounds with their Volumetric Stage.
